Safe Ways To Curl Wet Hair Overnight Without Damage

We've all heard that curling irons, heated rollers, and the good old-fashioned roller brush and hairdryer method can be bad for our hair. It can cause dryness and breakage, stopping your mane from looking as majestic as it could. However, if you still want gorgeous bouncy curls without the damage, here are some methods to try out.

The sock method

Grab a few socks (clean ones, please), and split your damp hair into two equal sections. Tie up the top section, and then use a claw clip to attach one sock to the first section of the bottom part of your hair. Then, divide each section in half before wrapping both strands around the sock in a crisscross motion. Then, rinse and repeat until all of your hair is in place.

Come the morning time, you'll have curls that'll stay in place for the entire day - all without using any damaging products!

Sleep with a top knot

First, you want to twist your hair into a top knot. To do this, split your hair in half, making two equal ponytails, and then loop them through each other. Once this is done, secure your weave with a silk scarf tied into a headband, ensuring that it won't come loose overnight. Come the morning time, flip your head side to side, and you'll have some loose, beach-kissed curls.

Top tip: Avoid brushing your hair when you set your hair free from its top knot. Doing so will straighten out many of the curls, ruining the effect.

Use a silk ribbon curler

Forget harmful curling wands, you need to get yourself a silk ribbon curler! Slightly dampen your hair, then don your brand new curler. Then, wrap your locks around the device and secure them in place with a scrunchie. Repeat for as many nights as it takes until you wake up with luscious curls!

Bonus tip: Make your curls last longer by coating them with a spritz of styling spray.

Sleep with braids

This is perhaps the easiest way to achieve overnight curls. Ensure that your hair is slightly damp, then put your locks into two loose braids. Then, hit the hay! By the time you wake up in the morning, your hair will feature more volume and - of course - more curls.

Top tip: Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce frizz.

Use hair rollers

Don't ignore the classics! Hair rollers are a fantastic way to achieve defined curls, all while you peacefully snooze through the night. The size of your desired curls will determine which rollers you go for, whether you're looking for lazy beach waves or tight rings. Ensure that you use foam rollers - not plastic - so you can still enjoy a peaceful night's sleep.

Use a bathrobe tie

This trend has gone viral on TikTok, and it's easy to see why. To gain lush curls from a simple tie, follow these easy steps:

  1. Section your hair into a middle parting. Then, place the dressing gown tie on the top part of your head. Ensure that you secure the robe with a claw clip.

  2. Braid your hair around the robe tie, laying strands of hair on both sides, wrapping them around the tie in opposite directions.

  3. Secure your new look with hairspray and hair ties, ensuring that nothing will fall out of place.

  4. Go to sleep! By the morning, you'll have a fab new do to show off!

Use straws

To achieve this look, you'll need some straws, some bobby pins, some conditioner and lots (and lots) of hairspray. First, part your hair and divide it into equal sections. Wrap your hair around the straws, starting at the bottom of your hair and working to the top of your scalp. Then, secure the straws in place with bobby pins to make sure they don't fall out while you sleep.

Bonus tip: Use an overnight conditioner to really boost the bounce of your curls!

While you want to avoid overdoing it with heat-based hair curling products, it doesn't mean that you have to stop using them altogether. Here are some tips to reduce the damage to your hair:

  • Use a heat protecting spray. Apply it to damp hair from the root to the tip, ensuring that every single strand is protected.

  • Choose the right temperature. The ideal temperature to set your products at will depend on your hair type, so speak to your stylist to find out what will work best for you.

  • Curl with clean hair. Make sure that you shampoo and condition your locks before curling, making sure that you don't accidentally seal in any oil or product buildup.
